Migraine Prevention

FDA Approved Migraine Headband Device

The Cefaly-brand migraine headband uses neural stimulation to prevent migraine headaches, which reduces the need for medications. A study shows that it may reduce the frequency of such headaches, which means that people will have more opportunites to enjoy their daily lives.

Migraine Headband According to the manufacturer, Cefaly utilizes electrical impulses directed toward the Trigeminal nerve (associated with these headaches) that runs up the forehead. This is why the device looks like a tiara or headband. Cefaly has a self-sticking electrode, and wearing it is similar to putting on eyeglasses. When the device is actuated (by pushing a button) there is a twenty minute treatment regimen regulated by the on-board electronics.

Lightweight Relief

The Cefaly weighs a little over an ounce, (45 grams) , and when purchased as a kit includes the device, electrode, wipes for cleansing the skin (important to ensure good contact) as well as a storage case and instruction manual. There is also a conductive gel used to make sure the signal gets to the nerve. Cefaly is described on its own site as a "cranial analgesic electrotherapeutic device" which uses TENS technology. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and this technology goes back to Roman times when someone noticed that his pain was reduced by stepping on an electric eel. (Under no circumstances should you use an electrical fish as a substitute for an approved medical device.)

Cefaly Cost

Already sold at Costco in Canada, the Cefaly costs $250 in that nation. In the United States, the device has been approved by the FDA for use by prescription only, so beware of knockoffs sold at flea markets and smoke shops. Becasue the Cefaly is listed as a medical device, this means that it may be subject to taxes under the Affordable Care Act, so in the US it may cost more than in Canada.

This device is already approved in Europe and Canada for migraine treatment, and recently allowed in the United States. .
